DIY Faux Copper Patina Planters: an update!

DIY Faux Copper Patina Planters: an update on how the copper patina paint finish is holding up outdoors.

Now that Summer is almost here, I’m in the midst of gardening heaven!

I’ve been planting both perennials and annuals, and tending to our existing shrubs and flowers, most of which bounced back nicely after all of the Winter snow and freezing temperatures we had this year.

In January, during one of the Winter storms, I decided to paint some large planter boxes. You might remember the Easy Faux Copper Patina Paint Finish tutorial I shared:

I used the Metal Effects paint line from Modern Masters to transform the old wooden planters, first giving them a pretty copper metallic finish, and then adding patina solution to give them a weathered look.

Since all of the pictures in that post were taken in the January snow, I thought it was time to share some updated pictures of the planters so you can see how they look in the garden.

These planters stayed outside from January through the rest of the Winter, subjected to snow, sleet, freezing rain, ice cold temperatures and everything in between.

The paint has no chips or cracks. There’s no sign that these planters have been outdoors for the past 4+ months. They look like the day I painted them!

I love the copper patina finish! The planters are almost like garden art, especially when the sun reflects off of them. So pretty!

(Yes, when I took this picture, I hadn’t yet weeded the pavers. Please don’t judge!)

We purchased Purple Fountain Grass for each planter. This grass has a stunning purple-red color, with feathery seed heads that appear later in the season and last well into the Fall.

I still plan on painting more of our pots with the Modern Masters Metallic Effects line, but it’s getting harder and harder to work indoors when all I want to do is play in the garden.

Gardening is like therapy to me, and even if I’m digging in the dirt and the bugs are getting to me, I’m still thoroughly enjoying myself.

On my Instagram account, whenever I share pictures of my garden, I use the hashtag #gardeningmakesmehappy — because it truly does!

Happy gardening!
